Just Go With It

I'll admit it right here.  I'm not a huge Adam Sandler fan.  Never really have been.  I did think 50 First Dates was cute and Click was a really good movie, but generally, not really my cup of tea.

So I was a little hesitant to watch his newest movie, Just Go With It, costarring Jennifer Aniston.  I usually watch her movies.  She's funny but not in a quirky way.

The whole plot is Adam Sandler's character overhears a conversation between his fiancĂ© and her bridesmaids on their wedding day on her true opinions of him.  They're not pretty, and it's kind of sad.  He had a big nose then, so he got into plastic surgery, fixed the nose, and kept the wedding ring.  He used it as a way to get girls.  No strings attached, and they wouldn't call him later.  Not a bad deal if you think of it logically.

Then he meets this very young girl and he had forgotten to put the ring on, they do whatever, and she reaches in his pocket for his business card (he should be getting her number anyways) and finds the ring, throws a big fit, and he starts a lie about how they're going through a divorce.  She wants to meet the "wife" and get her OK before they go further (really, how much further can you go? :) but I digress).  Adam Sandler panics and begs his long time office assistant to play the part.  He takes her shopping and makes her into the plastic surgeon's wife.  For those of you that know me, it would be like me wearing tight dresses and 6 inch heels.  Same transformation.  Jennifer Aniston's character is very simple.

They meet, and have drinks, and Jennifer plays the part beautifully, she's impatient, bullying towards the staff, and downright rude to her "husband".  Then as they're leaving, she gets a call from her kids, which then throws the new girlfriend for another tail spin, and she wants to meet them too.  Sandler then bribes Aniston's kids to play along, they go out, then go for a vacation to HI, which is where Aniston and Sandler realize they're in love.  Blah, blah, blah, you can take it from there.  The new girlfriend goes out of the picture, and Aniston and Sandler get married, etc.

Here's my only "issue" with the movie.  Don't get me wrong, I highly enjoy Romantic Comedies (Rom Coms), but this was SO cookie cutter, I knew what was going to happen after it started.  Is that necessarily bad?  Nah, not really.  I will give it props, it was really cute, and there were a number of funny parts that weren't corny.  The biggest plus for me is there were very few if any of those parts where it's funny, but you can't help feeling embarrassed for the character.  There were a couple of hand meets palm moments where hindsight allows us to inform the character that the move they made wasn't the smartest decision.  How many of us would like to have that kind of power on our lives?  Would we be surprised how predictable we are?  :)

Overall, I am glad I watched it.  It satisfied my need for some non-thinking entertainment.

I would recommend that if you can Netflix or Redbox it, that would be the way to go.  Do I plan on purchasing it?  Eh, I might.

Happy watching!

A Little Introduction

I happen to be one of those people who loves movies and hates politics.  So when I watch a movie, it makes no difference to me if the people involved voted Democrat or Republican, what their views are, or how they live their lives out here in the real world.  What I want in a movie is for it to make me think I'm there.  When I walk out of the movie theater after a great action movie, I want to carry myself like a secret agent.  When I leave after a romantic movie, I want to feel happy, like I'm the one that just fell head over heels in love.

The only type of movie you might never see posted on here is horror.  I can do psychological thrillers, but Saw?  I don't think so.

When I review the movies I watch, there will be spoilers in my reviews, hence the title of the blog.  I'll go from beginning to end, so this is your fair warning.  The title of the post will be the movie title, not some cryptic phrase, so you can easily skip past if you haven't seen it and don't want to have a part spoiled.

You should also be aware that I'm playing catch up so to speak.  I was not let out of my cage much when I was younger and although that made me very respectable and well-rounded, and was for the best really, I haven't seen a lot of the movies people think I "should" have seen.  I'll get to them, one at a time, and you get to read my thoughts every step of the way!

One last important thing.  I do happen to enjoy Television shows, and NCIS is my absolute favorite.  Part of this blog is going to be the completion of a project brought on by my watching the show.  At least a few times each episode, the character Anthony DiNozzo mentions ties from movies to the current case.  My project was to go through each of the episodes with a fine tooth comb and write down all the movies he mentions and watch every single one!  I'm on Season 4 out of "6" right now (7 not released on DVD yet, and 8 will start in a few weeks).  I will post the list down the road when I have it completed.

Happy watching/reading!
